The Timber Trail is one of New Zealand’s Great Rides — a place people come from all over the world to experience. Best of all, it’s free to ride, making it accessible for everyone.

With the support of DOC, MBIE, and Ruapehu District Council, the trail has a strong foundation. But maintaining and enhancing a trail of this scale takes ongoing care, attention, and investment — and there’s always more that can be done.

That’s where Friends of the Timber Trail come in.

We’re a volunteer-led group working on the ground to maintain, restore and enhance the trail — from clearing drains and repairing sections, to building picnic areas, shelters, and the small touches that make a big difference to every rider, walker, and runner.

Much of this work sits beyond what core funding can cover — but it’s what turns a great trail into an unforgettable one.
